What it does today
- Sections made of parts: catalogue profiles, rolled, welded and monosymmetric I sections, tees, angles, channels, folded sections, circular and rectangular hollow sections, solid shapes, box girders and polygons with holes and circular arcs, each placed, turned or mirrored, and made of steel, concrete or a material given by its constants
- Gross properties exact for the outline: area, centroid, second and third moments, principal axes, radii of gyration, elastic moduli and mass per length, for each part and for the whole, transformed to a reference material
- The finite element solution of St Venant torsion, warping, the shear centre and shear deformation, and thin-walled sections given by their midlines, with thin-walled theory's results beside those of the solid shape
- Plastic properties from each part's strength: plastic resistances and moduli, plastic neutral axes and the N–M_u–M_v interaction surface, with the bimoment on request
- Stresses of load cases at points, along lines or at every node: normal and shear stresses, von Mises and Tresca, with their extremes and the envelope over the load cases
- Files of several sections, sessions with undo and redo, kept runs of results compared side by side, and the plan views of the coming desktop program with picking, window selection, snapping and saved views, all as operations
How it is verified
The gross properties of a steel rectangle by hand and of catalogue profiles against their table values, and composites transformed to their reference material. Scenarios run through the operation handlers, the C API and the command-line program; the torsion, warping and plastic solutions are those of the sections library and its tests.
Performance
| Task | Budget | Measured |
|---|---|---|
| Gross properties of an IPE 400 through the C API | 0.2 ms | 80–89 µs on Linux |
| Torsion, warping and shear of an IPE 400 at the default mesh | 35 ms | 20.6–22.3 ms on Linux |
| Plastic properties with the default interaction fan | 3 ms | 2.52–2.62 ms on Linux |
| Rebuild a plan view after an edit, 50 parts and 2000 corners | 4 ms | 2.53–2.66 ms on Linux |
